Nowadays, fasting is very popular. However, it has been just as popular for many millennia, both for spiritual reasons and therapeutic reasons.
Jesus fasted for 40 days, Moses fasted twice for 40 days, Buddha’s fast allegedly went on for 6 years, and now their followers keep the practice of fasting for lent, for Yom Kippur and the Muslim for Ramadan.
Definition of fasting: “complete abstinence of food while resting”
The reason why fasting is used spiritually has to do with its power of purification! Fasting purifies both the spirit and the body.

I’ve done many different kinds of fasts for many years, so I know from personal experience how powerful this practice is.
One time, I abstained from food for 30 days, and I can tell you that it was not as easy as some people think. One or two days it’s no problem, but 30 days can be quite challenging both psychologically and physically.
However, after the 30 days, I felt completely reborn, felt that my energy was limitless, my body could function nonstop for long time, and my mind was incredibly sharp.
At the same time, I was experiencing many breakthroughs and miracles.
I have been a seeker for many years and I have done many things to help myself to become more conscious, and I have to say that the practice of fasting has been the most intense and the most rewarding.
I don’t advise anybody to fast for 30 days unless you are followed by a doctor or some kind of medical professional, because if your body is already too weak to start with, you might encounter some serious complications.
However, one or two days every week, or once a month, it’s mostly safe and beneficial as well.
Here are a few of the many health and spiritual benefits that the practice of fasting may give you:
HEALTH BENEFITS
1. As you fast, you will eliminate toxins from your body and rapidly lose weight. Be careful not do it for the purpose of losing weight though, because you will gain all the weight back, or more, when the fast is over. To avoid that, change your intention and make it for spiritual reasons, not for the purpose of losing weight. Let losing weight be a side effect, not the primary reason.
2. Fasting will resolve inflammation in your body, a main concern for many people nowadays.
3. Fasting gives rest to your digestive system allowing assimilation and elimination to work in an optimum way.
4. Fasting works wonders against edemas and water retention.
5. Fasting sharpens the mind making all your 5 senses more acute. Fasting works wonders on your taste buds, by enhancing them and as a result, allowing you to enjoy your food at a whole new level. Check out my book “Make love with food and lose weight” for more information on this.
6. Fasting can regulate blood pressure.
7. Fasting will significantly help you with allergies and purify your body in general.
8. USC researcher Valter Longo claims that fasting can slow down your aging.
SPIRITUAL BENEFITS
Now let’s examine the spiritual benefits of fasting.
1. Fasting will make you more conscious and realize that you are more than your body and it might make it easier for you to recognize the existence of God.
2. Fasting can give you prophetic dreams. In the Bible we are told that both Daniel and Joseph were gifted with dreams and revelations after a fast. I have experienced this myself, and I can assert that this is true.
3. Fasting will make your spirit stronger and your flesh weaker. Therefore, with time you will be able to claim victory over your addictions. That is because, slowly, the strong desires of the flesh will subside.
4. Fasting will purify your spirit and PURITY IS POWER.
5. Fasting will increase your vibration and will activate the “law of attraction”. So within, so without, you attract what you are.
6. As your spiritual power increases, the power of your words will double. It’s like giving steroids to your prayers.
7. Fasting will trigger you to experience major breakthroughs. As you fast, body, mind and spirit will align and your focus will magnify. If you have an issue that you need to resolve, then the next step is “abstinence from food !”
8. Fasting will help you to overcome sadness and lack of self-worth, and increase your FAITH.
In today’s world, Faith is a much misused word. It does not mean to belong to a particular religion, it means that you have no doubts, and you BELIEVE that all things are possible. Faith is a spiritual power that you can increase through fasting.
9. Fast with a group. When you fast with other people, not only it will be easier on you, but your spiritual power will also increase greatly.
10. Fasting brakes the conditioning of the mind in relation to food. It’s staggering to see how much resistance people have about fasting, because it’s almost impossible for some to think we can live without food.
Remember food is often a cultural indoctrination, not a true need of the body. People eat because they think that they have to eat, even when they are not hungry.
Fasting is a very serious practice, it is not a trend, and therefore you would want to do it diligently and make sure to always listen to your body. Your body will tell you when is ready for a fast and when is time to quit it.
The longer you fast, the more results you will have, but I encourage you to start with one day and if even one day is too much, instead of drinking only water, do it with fruits juices.
Slowly build it up to just water, and you will see your life force increasing.
And with time, it will become easier to endure the fast, because the fewer toxins you have, the easier it is.
